Many of the world famous private yachts are actually made here in Taiwan. Had a very different learning experience when classmates of a special program gathered together again for an excursion. This time we moved our location to the southern capital – Kaohsiung & viewed this… (continue reading…)

….This city from an entirely different angle. We went to visit the shipyard that built one of the most luxurious private yachts, the Kaohsiung Software Park where a Taiwanese drama was filmed (breath-taking view), and a mega-world built from nothing and now includes almost everything. It was definitely an amazing experience.

This is a sign on the wall as we entered the new Kaohsiung Software park (business buildings). it says Taiwan is now upside down because the new Kaohsiung is ready to compete with Taipei. Although Kaohsiung (the southern capital of Taiwan) is the 2nd largest city in Taiwan, the difference between Taipei and Kaohsiung still seems very wide. eg. in terms of population density and job opportunities. But in the recent years, I think Kaohsiung has been trying hard to find its way to be more competitive.

This is the 85 building, a landmark of Kaohsiung. When you see this building in Taiwanese films/drama, you know it’s filmed in this city. This is, by the way, the rooftop outdoor swimming pool on one of the business building of the software park. It doesn’t feel like an office building eh?

This place will look familiar to those who watched the Taiwanese drama – Black and White. It’s a drama about police in Kaohsiung and the kind of complicated link of the political world and the gang world.
I didn’t watch the drama before I went to the place where they filmed it. But I’ve heard good reviews of it so I pretty much scanned through the drama when I got back. xp

This room also appeared in the drama as the home to the main male character. It’s almost exactly the same as it appears in the drama. This will probably be rented out (by hour) for gatherings or other functions in the future.

The view from the balcony of the room in the photo before this one.

Then we went to visit a yacht building company. The company only builds the best of the best private yachts and the company doesn’t stand alone. Behind this company is a large corporation that built its empire with large commercial fishing ships, navy patrol ships, container ships, and commercial fishing. We learnt a lot from the young entrepreneur and got to go on one of the more expensive yachts that they’re building!

Inside the private yacht. It normally takes about 14 months to build this and each will cost around 30 to 50 million USD  (these yacht are usually highly customized). Then when you buy one, you have to be rich enough to maintain it every year. This is real luxury. But one important thing to set this yacht apart from other ones – you can navigate this yacht across the Atlantic or even the Pacific Ocean!

The Kaohsiung Harbour before us.  The harbour is a bit different from any other harbour in the sense that entry and exit from the harbour is restricted. It’s like going through immigration at passport control points in the airport, you need to let the officials know that you’re leaving from this harbour (except you need to file that at least 1 week in advance).

Many bars inside the private yacht.

Shipyward.

Had an awesome seafood feast for dinner and we each got a box of desert to take home!

After dinner, our bus took us to the E-Da World. It’s an unbelievable place and basically built from nothing.  We stayed at one of the hotels that night.

This is basically an empire built up by a corporation that made its fortune on steel and metal. There’s a huge outlet shopping mall, a theme park, 2 hotels with a total of about 1450 rooms, a university, a very expensive private school system from elementary to highschool (dual language system), a reputable hospital, an area for conventions, fashion shows, press conferences, golf course and residential area. The total investment they put into this place is about 40,000,000,000 TWD.

The lobby of the Crown Plaza Hotel. This hotel alone has about 700 rooms. It’s in the trial operation stage now.

The theme park is not open yet. It has multiple themes.

Then we went to see the show room of one of the houses for sale in the residential area. This is the living room/dining room of one of the houses.

After lunch at a restaurant for hospitality school interns, we walked back to the hotel to pick up our stuff. The European-looking buildings are part of the big shopping mall complex.
