Hyatt Regency at Kami Gora

Hakone is a popular hotspring resort town outside of Tokyo. With the Romancecar Train, you can get there in about a bit more than an hour. We chose 2 places to stay in Hakone. One is more western and the other one is traditionally Japanese. The western one is the Hyatt Regency in… (continue reading…)

…. upper Gora. The prices for hotels here around the end of the year can be quite shocking. So I think ti’s best to come during low season if you want to get a good deal for good hotels.

We took the Romancecar limited express from the Shinjuku station. For this limited express you need to pay a bit more than 800 JPY in addition to the Hakone Free Pass ( a pass that gives you access to most of the public transportation means in Hakone). But I think it’s worth it.

The lunch boxes sold on this train.

As we were getting close to Hakone, we could see the snow-covered Mountain Fuji in the distance.

When we arrived at Yumoto station in Hakone (the terminal station for the Romancecar), we had to take the Tozan Train (a mountain train) to go up to Gora. The train goes in a pretty slow speed (about 20kph) and wasn’t exactly comfortable. Too bad the train was totally packed also so we had to stand about 20 minutes or so to Gora.

When you arrive at the Gora Station, you could go to the nearby hotel booking/service office to ask them call Hyatt to send a free shuttle bus over to pick you up. This really helped because otherwise we had to either take a taxi or take the Tozan Cablecar to the Kami Gora station and take a short walk to the hotel. The photo above shows another hotel staff at the Hyatt Regency. :p

The hotel is more western; the service is more Japanese.

Behind the owls is the check-in area. Here you don’t find the big hotel check-in counters you see in international hotels and resorts. Instead the check-in process feels like you’re just sitting at some dining table or someone’s desk.

The design style of the hotel focuses on natural elements.

The main social space in the hotel is like a mega living room of someone’s house. You could also sit around the fire so you can feel the warmth of this place. There’s also a small TV/game room there as well that just feels like another room at someone’s house.

The warm colours of the hotel. It feels like a big house or cottage.

Owl is a theme in the interior decoration. You’d see lots of different kinds of owls in the public areas.

The view from the room. The place somehow feels like it has bits from the Royal Chiao Hsi Hotel in Yilan and the Onsen Papawaqa in Miaoli of Taiwan. Our rooms were on the 3rd floor. This corner room has a balcony. The view from the room is not obstructed because the hotel is located pretty high up the hill.

The other room doesn’t have a balcony but has a tea/chill place. Once we were in the hotel we just didn’t feel like going out. So we went to none of the places we planned to go… we stayed at the hotel until it was time for dinner. Maybe this sounds a bit wasteful of the precious time but later we thought since we paid so much for the hotel, why not just spend more time in it?! There’s another kind of holiday that involves more resting and daydreaming than roaming around like a madman, we suppose.

Also the internet charge here is quite high so we just didn’t bother to go on internet. Hence the sketch of the landscape by someone shown above. It’s one of the few produced in that afternoon.

Before going out for dinner, we went to the lobby for the happy hours.

MOET et Chandon!!
During the Hyatt happy hours, we could get free glasses of Champagne, red wine, white wine and all kinds of soft drinks for free. Of course if you want anything else, those won’t be free. Lots and lots of Champagne and wine.

The restaurant in here also has a open kitchen like the one in the Grand Hyatt in Taipei. A few years ago I was at the Taipei Grand Hyatt for a social event that involved making some desert with the pasty chef there.

Captured the sunrise next morning from our room. But of course I went to sleep right after.

The morning sunlight just makes things look so different.

If your room booking comes with breakfast, you could choose to have the French style or the Japanese style. This is the Japanese style.

Then we started our day with a journey to what was once called the valley of hell. The photo above was taken when we took the Hakone Ropeway from Souzan to Owakudani. That’s the ocean in the distance.
