[ London ] Criterion Restaurant

There are all kinds of festivals in London. But the one that I would be interested in is the restaurant or dine out festival. When I went down the list a while ago, it was definitely quite a long list. The restaurant festival here works pretty much like Dine Out Vancouver where you can order a special set menu at a fixed price. We went to one of those over 100 years old…

… restaurant here. It definitely has a lot of stories to tell. The Criterion Restaurant in the Piccadilly Circus area. I was first attracted by the super “gold” look to the restaurant when I saw photos of it online.

Apparently this restaurant is about 100 years old and has a rich history (first opened in 1873!!).  It was said that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (author of Sherlock Holmes) “first imagined the meeting between Dr. Watson and the enigmatic Sherlock Holmes, in the Criterion Long Bar.” The bar area I suppose is the cover photo. The dining area is more at the “end” or back of the restaurant.

Our London Restaurant Festival menu came with a glass of prosecco.

The festival menu consisted of 2 or 3 courses (includes desert) and a glass of prosecco.

To be honest, I thought the food on the festival menu wasn’t that good. Actually I would only think the desert was good enough to be mentioned. If you’re not planning to spend a lot of $ on a meal here, you can also get the pre-theatre menu, which amounts to about the same price as what the restaurant offers for the restaurant festival. Not sure if it’s the same menu ‘though.

The desert was presentable and tasted great.

They gave us a dish of this at the end. It was some yummy desert but unfortunately we were way too full to stuff them in.

The Byzantine gold actually reminds me of some places like the seafood restaurant and the Emirate Palace hotel we saw in Abu Dhabi.

At night, they also have live musical performances as well and they dim the lights. So it was definitely has the old world luxury and air to it.

This area with the red chairs is the lounge bar area.

This small revolving door leads you and out of a totally different world.

When you exit from it, you see one of the busiest places in London – The Piccadilly Circus and the west end theatre district.
