A Hotel Made of Gold
In Abu Dhabi, there’s a so-called “eight-stars” hotel by the ocean. The interior decoration took up 40 tons of pure gold and 5kg of pure edible gold is used every year on the dessert at the hotel. This is the Emirate Palace, a…(continue reading...)
… luxurious hotel that was built as another symbol of the country’s ambition to break records.
Some say this is an eight-star hotel because there just has nothing been anything like it. From west wing to the east wing, the length is 1 km. It’s huge for a hotel.
This hotel was built after the famous Burj Arab Hotel off the shore of Dubai. This hotel was built with the aim to surpass it in terms of luxury.
This hotel took about 3 billion USD to build. It only took 3 years to build and was opened in 2005. It was the most famous hotel to build in the world until 2010 when it was surpassed by a hotel in Singapore.
it’s not that difficult to get lost in the hotel if you’re wandering around. Sometimes hotel staff get lost as well.
The interior decoration is indeed very luxurious. The interior decoration used up 40 tons of pure gold. Even the marbles (imported from 12 countries) are very carefully selected for matching patterns. This, of course, all came with a price.
The whole hotel just looks very grandioso. The chandeliers are also by Swarovski
There’s a total of 394 hotel rooms. But there are a few rooms that cannot be booked even if you have money because they are reserved for the emirs of the emirates or leaders/heads of other countries.
When we were waiting in the lobby for check-in, there were fresh juices and roses for ladies. x)
Other than the ceilings, some said you’d most likely find lots of gold leaves on door knobs, walls and things like that.
Because there are a lot spaces in there so it’s decorated with shelves of “antiquities” that’s for sale.
When we were there, it happened to be the day before the Laureus World Sports Award ceremony. There was a lot of preparation work underway.
Mercedes Benz.
The outdoor area is being set up for the Award Ceremony. The car belongs to the corporate partner: Mercedes Benz.
The outdoor swimming pool is huge too. This is the one on the west wing. There’s also one on the east wing (had to take a buggy/electric car over). But it was getting too cold so we gave up on that.
There’s also a small Japanese teahouse (more for display) in the hotel.
The restaurant where we had breakfast and dinner has a very pretty arched ceiling.
The key for the room is a plastic coin.
Every hotel room has a butler (but probably shared among different rooms). We happened to have met ours when we went out of our door. He even gave us his business card.
Every room has a balcony. if you’re lucky or pay more, you’d maybe get one with the view of the shoreline.
But honestly, although the hotel looks very extravagant, I think the rooms just look like any other 5-star hotel. & Although the soft drinks do not require extra charge, there’s not much to choose from (largely cans of coke or sprite). & you need to pay for the tea (they came in cans as well).
We thought we read somewhere that every room comes with a computer. But apparently that wasn’t our case. This hotel is part of the Kempinski Group (a luxury hotel brand). But I don’t think the group is quite at the level for doing luxury hotels. For the 350+ EUR we paid to the Kempinski hotel at the Munich Airport, it was not really that worth the price either.
I suppose the Etihad Airways is one of its sponsors?!
When we left the hotel the next morning, we saw lots of press people standby for the big event.
There were also quite a view cars for the VIPs.
Then we saw the count down sign to the Award Ceremony on the street of Abu Dhabi.
